The streets of Cairo and the promenade of Alexandria – both settings for a dance of everyday women in Egypt.
In Cairo – strong, bold, and present;
In Alexandria – soft, feminine, and playful.
This dance offers plenty of room for emotion, sensuality, and self-confidence.
In this workshop, you will learn:
- How to work with the Melaya (technique)
- How to choose music for your dance
- How to express the typical style and essence of the dance in your movements
Through simple step combinations, we practice these principles with lots of expression, which is my main focus.
If possible, please bring a Melaya; a veil will also work. No new techniques will be taught – the focus is on interpretation, expression, and presence.
We will also compare the two styles: differences in movement, music, and posture are explained and demonstrated through practical combinations.
